MEDICAL BILLING AND CODING CERTIFICATE

The Medical Billing and Coding Certificate is a 525-hour professional certification program at Lackawanna College. It gives each student a full understanding and knowledge of medical terminology, billing, and coding to work in the healthcare industry.

Coursework, taught from the practitioner’s perspective, focuses on skills and coding competencies used in settings such as hospitals and physician practices. This program offers courses with an updated curriculum covering the latest coding standards. Those standards will change in the United States from the International Classification of Diseases version 10 (ICD-10) to ICD-11 standards on January 1, 2022.

WHAT’S INVOLVED IN OUR MEDICAL BILLING AND CODING CERTIFICATION PROGRAM?

Medical billing and coding are critical to the healthcare industry and any well-run business. Therefore, it is the responsibility of medical billing and coding programs everywhere to give students comprehensive knowledge of working in medical environments using medical terminology, billing, and coding.

We teach our medical billing and coding classes from the practitioner’s perspective. Courses focus on skills and coding competencies used in settings such as hospitals and physician practices.

The curriculum covers the latest coding standards. This part of the program prepares students to take the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam.

We have also added a Spanish for the Medical Front Office component that will teach medical front office professionals crucial phrases to be able to converse with Spanish-speaking individuals.

The program runs 525 hours (25 hours per week for 21 weeks), after which a certificate is awarded.
